TownePlace Suites by Marriott opens in Dickinson
Brent Newbry, regional director of sales at Lodging Dynamics Hospitality Group, the national management company for TownePlace Suites, said that the extended-stay facility has been planned for several years and that it “will still be a very popular hotel in Dickinson” regardless of the energy industries slowdown.
Newbry cited customer loyalty to Marriott through their rewards programs as a strong point for the hotel and believed the company’s name, which he called a “power brand”, will boost the location’s prospects.
Lisa Sanborn, general manager of TownePlace Suites, said the slower economy “really doesn’t affect our operations at this point.”
TownePlace Suites by Marriott is located at 240 29th St W., just north of Mac’s Hardware.
Dickinson Museum Center hires
The City of Dickinson has hired Angela Rayne as the new Museum Coordinator for the Dickinson Museum Center. As coordinator, Rayne will oversee the operations of the entire museum complex, including Prairie Outpost Park, the Pioneer Machinery Building, the Joachim Regional Museum, and the Dickinson Dinosaur Museum. She started her duties on February 8th.
Rayne comes to Dickinson from Evergreen, Colo., where she most recently held the position of executive director of Humphrey History Park and Museum, a living history museum on 35 acres that includes a 1930’s ranch. She holds a master’s degree in Anthropology/Museum Science and Archeology, and a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a minor in Geology.
Rayne has held numerous leadership positions, including executive directorships at the Houston Fire Museum in Houston, Texas, the Denver Firefighters Museum in Denver, Colo., and the Hiwan Homestead Museum in Evergreen, Colo. “I am thrilled to be a part of the Dickinson Museum Center and I am looking forward to developing stunning new exhibits, with help from the community, that tell fascinating stories about Dickinson and North Dakota”, Rayne said.
Paleontologist, Denver Fowler is originally from the area of Manchester in the UK, and studied for his undergraduate and master’s degrees at the UK Universities of Durham, and Bristol (respectively). He recently defended his Ph.D, attained under Prof. Jack Horner of the Museum of the Rockies, Montana State University, which studied how using precise data for the ages of rock formations affects the way we interpret dinosaur evolution.
Denver has discovered and collected dinosaurs and other fossils from across the UK, China, Mongolia, and many parts of the western US; most notably the Hell Creek Formation of Eastern Montana. Denver also has a background in media, having worked for Impossible Pictures, London; the same production team which made Walking with Dinosaurs for the BBC.
Chamber of Commerce gets new director
The Dickinson Chamber of Commerce welcomes Cheryl Viola as their new director. Cheryl joined the Chamber in 2014. She holds a BA in University Studies from Dickinson State University and is currently finishing an MBA in Marketing. Cheryl brings experience in customer relations, technology, office management, and leadership skills. Cheryl and her family settled in Dickinson in 2009. She looks forward to continued growth in our vibrant community.
Leadership Day - Dickinson Chamber of Commerce
Twelve high school seniors in the Leadership Dickinson program, along with their directors, traveled to Medora with Terri Thiel on March 9th
for a day of learning about the attractions and experiences in the area.
The tour began at the Chateau de Mores Visitor Center, then to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Billings County Museum, and ended with the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Visitors Center, where they also toured the Maltese Cross Cabin.
Marketplace for Kids
Terri Thiel was the opening speaker for Marketplace for Kids that was held at Dickinson State University on March 15th
. Her presentation educated the attendees on tourism in North Dakota and how it impacts everyone, along with the opportunities in the industry.
The activities at Marketplace for Kids are designed to help them become comfortable with change, while learning to thrive on positive competition. Lessons, based on standards and benchmarks, help students develop the skills needed for recognizing possible entrepreneurship opportunities and then show them how to organize their ideas for development and growth of actual products.
The Dickinson CVB has been busy organizing the marketing plans for 2016. This is the time that ad placement and ad creation is in full swing. From print ads to online digital ads, the target markets for leisure travel are in partnership with the ND Tourism Division.
While print is still a good medium, overwhelmingly, the online presence continues to rise. The increase in online marketing includes content stories, photos, target ads, social media, and constant monitoring.

More Eyes on North Dakota
Months of planning and implementing details paid off as Josh Duhamel announced the 2016 North Dakota Tourism campaign live on NBC’s TODAY show in February. The live audience alone garnered 2.9 million viewers and had an estimated value of more than $250,000. Partnered with local and regional television coverage, online coverage and social media has resulted in over 1 billion impressions. Those are real numbers!
